Unit #16
The huge upsurge in electronic commerce has produced an urgent need for
information protection. In limited environments, industry is forced to turn
to sophisticated mathematical cryptosystems. We propose furthering our interaction
with the Digital Technology Lab in Schaumburg, IL, by setting up co-advising
of students, whereby students learn at UIUC the theory behind potential
attacks (both mathematical and physical) on these cryptosystems and apply
it to the security problems faced by Motorola in its production of cellular
phones, software definable radio, smart cards, etc. In turn we at UIUC will
get feedback on what problems are important in practice.
