Seedbed of Institutes
Since the invention of PLATO — the world’s first interactive computer learning system — in the 1960s, CSL has been the seedbed for institutes that focus on specific research initiatives.
More recently, CSL’s expertise in reliability and security has led to the formation of the Information Trust Institute, which creates trustworthy systems with applications in energy, finance, defense and homeland security, among others.
And CSL’s focus on international collaboration helped initiate the Advanced Digital Sciences Center in Singapore, which is developing new technologies for digital media and the power grid.
Finally, the Lab's expertise in high-performance computing drove the creation of the Parallel Computing Institute, which is working to overcome computational challenges in science, engineering, medicine and business through education and research at all levels -- from nanoscale chips to the largest supercomputers.
Like PLATO, these institutes are shaping and changing the way people live, work and play.
